Recently in science at St. Aloysius School, the fifth grade class studied that the seasons on Earth are caused by the tilt of the Earth’s rotational axis and by the resulting changes in the angle of the sunlight arriving in different parts of the world at different times on the year. Science teacher, Dr. Fogel, guided the young scientists in a STEM investigation to explore the question: How does inclination affect the amount of heat an object receives from the sun? Using a thermometer, cardboard, black construction paper and tape, the students constructed a device designed to measure the temperature as a function of a viewing angle adjusted toward the sun. The individual devices were angled to specific degrees of inclination and data (temperature) was recorded and graphed. From their data, the students drew their conclusions.
