NEW CANAAN, Conn., Sept. 9, 2010 – This morning, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced that New Canaan’s Saint Aloysius School had been named a National Blue Ribbon School for 2010. St. Aloysius was one of 304 schools nationwide – 254 public and 50 private schools – and among only 12 in Connecticut to attain this prestigious recognition. St. Aloysius School Principal Dr. Donald A. Howard shared the exciting news with the faculty, staff and students today.
“This is a wonderful recognition for our faculty, our students and their families, and the entire St. Aloysius School family,” said Dr. Howard. “With substantial support from the Bridgeport Diocese, we have worked hard to develop a challenging curriculum for our students to ensure they are ready to enter any high school prepared for success. And
because everything we do is rooted in our Catholic values, we have been able to foster an environment in which our students can truly thrive academically, socially and spiritually.” St. Aloysius School earned this award for “Outstanding Academic Achievement” in reading
and mathematics.
The School’s eighth grade graduating classes of the past two years scored in the top 10 percent nationally on standardized reading and math tests for five
consecutive years.
Dr. Howard explained, “The Blue Ribbon honor confirms in a very public way something we’ve already known: we have high academic standards and we help every child to develop
their true potential. Our students are routinely admitted into honors‐level math, English
and social studies classes in parochial, private and public high schools throughout the
region.”
The U.S. Department of Education states that schools chosen as National Blue Ribbon
recipients are models of excellence that other schools can emulate.
St. Aloysius School will participate in the official awards ceremony in November in
Washington, D.C., where representatives of all the Blue Ribbon schools will receive Blue
Ribbon School flags and engraved plaques to commemorate their success.
The St. Aloysius School was founded in 1956 and remains steadfast in its Catholic teachings
and values as it prepares to celebrate its 55th anniversary. Academic excellence is
promoted through the spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional development of each
student.
